What: Summer Putting League When: Thursdays 5:30 6:00 (June, July, August) Who: You of course! Why: Because it is no longer acceptable to stink at putting. Where: Rotating our three in town courses (More details below) Cost: $3 ($2 goes toward Payout, $1 goes towards supplies until supplies are payed for, then the dollar goes to the club.) I'm going to make a payout chart to be consistent. My target is to payout to top third, but for low turnouts, it may be a little off from that. Format: Will be different every week. I'll try to keep the weekly format posted a couple of weeks in advance. Input for variety will be appreciated.
June 3rd - PJ Irvin park - Stations June 10th - Maxwell Park - Stations June 17th - Forrest Park - A game called "21" June 24th - PJ Irvin Park - Cricket July 1st - Maxwell Park - stations July 8th - Forrest Park - tbdCancelled July 15th - PJ Irvin Park - Round Robin July 22nd - Maxwell Park - cricket July 29th - Forrest Park - stations August 5th - PJ Irvin Park - A game called "21" August 12th - Maxwell Park - tbd August 19th - Forrest Park - Cricket August 26th - PJ Irvin Park - cancelled.

I need some help with the payout chart. I kind of wanted to do an overall chart, but as I get to higher numbers of people showing up, it gets harder to divvy out the money and feel like I'm being fair to everyone. Example: for 6 players is easy 8 and 4 bucks for 1st and 2nd respectively. for 9 players it is still not bad... 9, 6, and 3 bucks for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. When I get to 12 players though it starts to get tough... 11, 7, 4, and 2 bucks for 1st through fourth. at this point, I'm feeling like I'm starting to screw people, because they are only going to get 1 more dollar or no more dollars for winning the same place with more people. I hope this makes sense, and if anyone can give me some advice on this, that would be great. I also considered doing a payout chart like the one that J-man is doing for Spring league, but I wanted to pool everyone together. The reason I am pooling everyone together is because putting is the one part of the game in which everyone has an equal chance at getting good.
Thoughts please...

I like it! Keeping a payout % of the total players is probably a good idea. Alternate your payouts & adding more players, it will all work out. Just write up a list of payout & stick to it. If you want to continue to pay out more people (1/3 or a 1/4), & with the nice & low pay in, which I like, will only let you up the anti one or two $. Here is what I've come up with in the few minutes I have. Feel free to modify it and all.
9 people, 3 people paid - $18 total = 1st $8, 2nd $6, 3rd $4 10 people, 3 people paid - $20 total = 1st $9, 2nd $7, 3rd $4 11 people, 3 people paid - $22 total = 1st $9, 2nd $7, 3rd $6 12 people, 4 people paid - $24 total = 1st $9, 2nd $7, 3rd $5, 4th $3 13 people, 4 people paid - $26 total = 1st $10, 2nd $7, 3rd $6, 4th $3 14 people, 4 people paid - $28 total = 1st $10 , 2nd $8, 3rd $6, 4th $4 15 people, 4 people paid - $30 total = 1st $11 , 2nd $9, 3rd $6, 4th $4

| For all of you who did not go you really missed out! This is a great opportunity to learn about your putting weaknesses and strengths and to improve upon them. I know everyone who did go felt like they got a lot of the putting practice. The stations provided excellent challenges while still promoting confidence. I can already tell that it is going to do wonders for my game. This is a unique experience that I think everyone should give a chance. Hope to see you all next week. |

My two cents:
I like the idea of working on my putting. But since I only have one night a week available to play disc golf with other people, I'd prefer to play actual rounds so I can work on my entire game. If the putting league was shorter (1 hour or so) and started either earlier or later, we could get in a round of golf before or after the putting league so we could all work on other aspects of our game.
I'm sure I'm in the minority here (everyone else is already playing in a regular league on Wednesday nights), but I thought I'd just explain why I'm struggling with this concept.
Thanks for putting this together Dave-O. I really appreaciate all that you do for B/N disc golf!!! |

I think you are a bit off base dwight. Putting is disc golf. Driving will come and driving will go, but putting is the game.

me and the Fellas was talkin after the league...Ok, I'm not in Mayberry any more.... Cough Cough...
Ben, Dan, Mike and I were talking after the course, and there were a few thoughts that went out. One of them was to make it a little shorter. We had 41 stations, and went 90 minutes. It felt a little bit long to all of us, so a Shorter league time may definitely come out of this. Also, I had a few mandatory shots, and I will maybe adjust how many of each mandatory shots. Also, Ben had the thought that I don't need to get to every basket. I could do a few more at less baskets. Great Idea.
Noah, I'm not apposed to adjusting the starting time, especially if I shorten the time a bit. Mike, I agree with you that the game is putting, but, I think Dwight was just waxing that he would rather play a whole round with friends than do a putting contest if he has only the option of one or the other.
Also, my big picture here is that I'm hoping to get people together that push each other a bit and force each other to improve by competition. I know that one of my problems in my tournament games is that sometimes during a long round or long day I lose focus. This happened during this last week's putting league. I was being very competitive, but lost focus and had a string of missed puts and bad decisions. I have learned from this league so far, and I know I will continue to do so. Another big idea that I have is that I want something established so that when winter hits, we can continue this inside somewhere.

Dave-O's got it - if I had the choice between putting or playing a round, the round wins every time. And besides - I've got a basket in my backyard, so I can putt almost anytime I want.
And last weekend in Des Moines, I carded an 8 and a 9 in round 2 & 3. On those holes, I only putted twice. If I had made those 30 footers, I would have shot a 7 and an 8. Soooooo...I think I've got some other areas of my game that need some work too. |

Several companies have glow putters, but they are something you normally have to order online. Aviar, Wizard, Magic?, Lighting #2 Putter & Rubber Putter (which I own), Magnet & probably others I don't know of. It seems like the disc golf companies have a hard time creating glow disc plastics which keep the same flight. It also does not seem to be a type of disc most people own. I have a lighting driver, a roc & a rubber putter for my glow rounds. It seems like most plastics keep the light for about one or two throws, so whatever you get, I would advise having a small, but bright, LED flashlight to keep recharging the disc as you play. Glow rounds are a lot of fun to play. I played one with Ken last year & I want to play again sometime this summer.
I should be there on Thursday. Looking forward to having some fun with the putting league.

Gateway is hands down the way to go with glow putters (or any disc.) Gateway Superglow does vary in firmness/grip, but not as much as their regular plastic. You can find some discontinued Glow Magnets, but it is hard to find good glow putters outside of Gateway. Also on the upside Gateway plastic is crazy bright. Just use a UV LED flashlight and you will never be able to lose that thing at night.
PS I have about 3 UV LED flashlights to sell if anyone is interested. |

When we play 21 at Forrest on the 17th, here are the rules.
Twenty-one
Disc Golf 21 is a putting practice game vaguely similar to "HORSE". It's also like some dart games. The game is normally played with 2 to 6 players, though It has been played with as many as 10! Play -- Each player putts with 3 putters from the same point or line. <> The player with the most points chooses the lie regardless of the winner of the last round. Scoring <> A successful putt scores 2 points. <> A putt hitting metal, basket or higher, without staying in the basket scores 1 point. <> If you are the only one to hit metal your first "metal" is doubled making it worth 2 points and if you are the only one to score a legal putt your first legal putt will be scored double making it worth 4 points. <example> if you score 2 metals and one putt and you are the only one to score metal but another player scored a putt you will get 2 points for your putt, plus 2 points for your first metal [being the only one] and 1 more point for the other metal for a total of 5 points. Winning When one or more player has a score of 21 or more the game ends. If more than one players score over 21 the highest score wins, ties may be played off. Regular players may have a favorite place for the first round and then next places are picked by the winner of the last round [I scored 3 & you scored 2; then I pick the next spot]. Mandos and other fun variations are encouraged but choosing mandos that always gives you the advantage Is considered poor sportsmanship. If no one scores any points in a round the player picking the spot forfeits their right to choose for 2 rounds. The player with the next highest score will choose the lie. If every disc by every player hit metal or better that round is voided, no scores are counted and the Choice of lie is forfeited to player with the lowest score for 2 rounds.
