WHAT: Winter League 2009-2010
WHEN: Sundays 1:30 P.M Nov. 1 through Feb. 28 (18 weeks)
WHERE: Maxwell Park – All November Sundays (5), and February 7 PJ Irvin Park – All December Sundays (4), and February 14, 21 Forrest Park – All January Sundays (5), and February 28 *I arranged the schedule to avoid possible muddy conditions at Forrest and PJ. Hopefully the ground will be mostly frozen on dates when we play there.
COST: *$4 entry per week/optional ace fund $1
From the $4 entry: $2 will go to weekly payouts (pay 1/3rd of field). $1 will go to end of league payouts (pay 1/3 of field). $1 will go to cover costs of a weekly CTP disc. As player turnout dictates, more CTP awards (in the form of cash) may be added to a week.
*For the weekly CTP: during the regular round three different holes will be selected. The closest throw at each selected hole enters a CTP throw off at the end of the round. If one player gets the closest throw on two of the selected holes then that player will get two throws in the CTP throw off. The other player will still get only one throw in the throw off. (This rule will be known as the Majerczyk Mandate). Of course if the same player has the closest throw on all three selected holes then the disc (and any added CTP cash) will automatically be awarded to that player. All efforts will be made each week to designate a lefty, a righty, and a neutral hole as the three selected holes.
FORMAT: Combination of singles and doubles
Explanation of format:
League day scoring: *Each Sunday we will blind draw into cards.
*Each card will blind draw into double’s teams.
*On each card, each player will play half the course individually for a 9-hole score.
*On each card, each double’s team will play half the course for a 9-hole score. Joker's will play California on 5 holes (one extra shot per hole) and double shot on 4 holes.
*An individual 9-hole score will then be combined with a player’s 9-hole double’s score for an OVERALL score.
*Example: 9-hole individual score of 27 plus 9-hole double score of 23 = an OVERALL score of 50.
*The two 9-hole rounds will vary by week (front 9 and back 9, even and odd holes, etc.)
*Weekly payouts will go to the best OVERALL score, or scores, depending on turnout.
*The best individual 9-hole score will break a tie. If a tie still exists, then a CTP throw off will occur at the end of league play for that day.
*A wind adjustment factor, a temperature adjustment factor, a precipitation adjustment factor, and a tee pad adjustment factor will all be used to help reduce a player’s OVERALL score resulting in an ADJUSTED WEEK SCORE (see below).
Overall league scoring: *The lowest league averages at the end of league (in Feb.) will be rewarded. Attendance (money paid in) will dictate how deep the end of league payout will be.
*Averages will be obtained using a player’s ADJUSTED WEEK SCORE from each week.
*A player’s nine lowest ADJUSTED WEEK SCOREs will be used to compute that player’s final league average. Thus, to be eligible for end of league rewards, a minimum of 9 weeks must have been played.
ADJUSTMENT FACTORS Wind 00-05 mph = no deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 06-10 mph = one point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 11-15 mph = two point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 16-20 mph = three point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 21-25 mph = four point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 26-30 mph = five point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. +31 mph = seven point deduction from OVERALL weekly score.
Temperature 50°+ = no deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 40° to 49° = one point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 30° to 39° = two point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 25° to 29° = three point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 20° to 24° = four point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 15° to 19° = five point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 10° to 14° = six point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 05° to 09° = seven point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. 00° to 04° = eight point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. -01° to -05° = nine point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. -06° to -10° = ten point deduction from OVERALL weekly score. -11° or lower = twelve point deduction from OVERALL weekly score.
Precipitation *Deductions from OVERALL weekly scores for precipitation will come from a sliding scale of five – the greater the snow, sleet, rain, etc., the greater the deduction (discretion of league official). This deduction can be used for precipitation that is occurring or is already on the ground.
Tee pad conditions *Deductions from OVERALL weekly scores for tee pad conditions will come from a sliding scale of five - the more tee pads that are ice/snow covered, the greater the deduction from scores (discretion of league official). This deduction may seem sort of redundant with the precipitation adjustment but sometimes the tee pads can be completely clear while the rest of the course is ice or snow covered.
*The adjustment factors were added to try and keep league attendance up, especially on harsh days. Scoring advantages can be gained by playing when it is windy, cold, raining, snowing, and/or when the tee pads are not in great condition.
MISC *Traditional Winter League rules will be in effect - NO OB.
*Traditional Winter League course setups will be in effect - all short pins (PJ and Maxwell).
*Even though there is a lot of explanation here, to understand the league scoring is quite simple. Sometimes it just takes a lot of words to explain even simple ideas.
*I want the league to be unique and interesting. With the combination of singles and doubles and the adjustment factors I think I accomplished that.
*The biggest dilemma in running a league is making it fair and competitive for all. Often that dilemma is handled by creating divisions. However, last year we had maybe a dozen winter leaguers with about seven of them being really hardcore, so having divisions with small turnouts like that will not make sense and it can lead to problems each week when it comes to getting on cards and into doubles groups, etc. Hopefully, the singles/doubles format and the adjustment factors can level the playing field somewhat. Since this is a new format I can't say for sure but I would say that good players who only come when the weather is mild will lose out in the league standing to lesser players who play on the worst days.

I am looking forward to playing. I'll be unable to join you the first week, but I am looking forward to the sliding scale of deductions! Great idea!
When you are searching for a lost disc may you find two. PDGA # 38518 |

Dan, I am digging it. I will help you set up a spreadsheet to save you some time with the calculations if you like. It will only cost you a couple of ice cold brewskies!!
